Mental health struggles impact more than the mind. Trauma is stored in the body. Headwaters built our treatment program accordingly, making sure we take a holistic approach to healing.
What is Residential Treatment?
Headwaters is a live-in treatment center for 12 to 17-year-olds navigating serious mental health issues. Residential treatment allows us to provide around-the-clock care in a safe, home-like environment.
Our program is designed to offer the structure teens need to reduce their anxiety and focus on treatment, while still giving enough flexibility that they can explore their emotions and build stronger connections with themselves and those around them.

Every customized treatment plan includes a combination of polyvagal theory, somatic experiencing, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and bilateral stimulation (BLS) to address the body mind connection.
These evidence-based therapies have been shown to help teens heal, regulate their nervous system and build resilience.

Why Choose Headwaters?
For children to heal from trauma, they must feel safe. Headwaters was designed with this need in mind. Our facility was built to put people at ease and our team has undergone years of training to create a sense of felt safety for those around them. This process cannot be rushed, and we give patients the time they need to feel seen, heard, and valued.
Headwaters develops personalized treatment plans for every teen in our care. We take the time to get to know people, so we can build plans tailored to their unique experiences, strengths, and needs. Customization of treatment ensures each teen receives care that truly supports their healing.
Unlike many traditional residential treatment programs, our team goes beyond talk therapy to include body-based and nervous system regulation techniques. Trauma can rob children of their connection to themselves. Our treatments help participants shift out of survival mode and reconnect to their bodies and their truest sense of self.
Headwaters encourages our participants to explore their emotions and body’s response to those feelings. This allows children in our care to develop long-term emotional regulation, build resilience, and gain the coping skills they need to navigate life beyond treatment.
Sadly, many treatment programs only focus on symptom reduction and short-term stabilization. Not at Headwaters. Our therapies help rewire the nervous system for safety, connection, and stability, giving teens healthier tools to manage stress, emotions, and relationships.
When individuals are engaged in their treatment it leads to better results and, ultimately, helps teens reach their goals. Headwaters pushes teens to take an active role in their care.

Family Involvement is Key
Families play a critical role in their child’s recovery, which is why family involvement is a key component of treatment at Headwaters. We offer family therapy sessions and teach parents and teens skills to strengthen their communication and connection.

Learning Never Stops
Headwaters gives teenagers a place to learn about themselves and grow. But learning does not stop there. We also provide participants with on-site educational programs, accredited by the State of Idaho, to make sure teenagers continue their academic progress during treatment. This support and can help them stay on track with their peers academically, which builds confidence and sets teens up for long-term success.

Helping Teens Transition Home
Headwaters is just one stop in the journey. To help teens transition back to their everyday lives, we work closely with families, outside care providers, and schools. This helps us establish continuity of care, allows teens to continue getting the support they need to heal and sets them up for long-term success.
